The stretch between January 2 and March 10 can be quite a long one for those
of us living north of the 49th parallel. Generally, the season is one of temperatures
plunging and rising again, where the sun peaks out to tease us for three days
and then disappears for two weeks, and when all the snow turns to dirty slush.
This season means that everything from moving to that new home you just bought to just getting to work selling Motorola leather cases is more difficult.
All in all, the first quarter of the year is enough to make any girl want to
crawl under the sheets and stay there until April. We need whatever we can find
to put some cheer in this drear, so it's a real treat to see the big names
in fashion starting to roll out their lines before Valentine's Day, in
anticipation of the coming spring. We can start to imagine hiking in the Vancouver
mountains or relaxing and unwinding at a Toronto bed & breakfast.
In this series of articles, we are going to highlight some of those spring
fashion trends for 2009 as they pertain to the clothes we wear. As always when
talking fashion, we are aware that the price range for the originals is well
beyond the scope of most of our readers (not to mention our staff). Unless you're
reading this from a posh Kitchener real estate property or a luxury condo, you'll probably need to meld these tips into your mall shopping.
But knowing what is making a big impression on the catwalks of New York, Paris,
and Toronto can certainly lead to some good starting points for your own fashion
shopping experience.
To kick off the series, let's take a quick look at some of the trends
that seem to be running through all fashion styles this season, from hair accessories
to shoes:
Colours: One colour styles are in this season, and for the most part
the colours are dark. Light greys and different shades of black were particularly
popular this year; perhaps a nice contrast to our moods as that sun starts to
shine again. Don't fret, fans of true colour; tropical shades, such as
papaya, are big this year too. So, if you can't make it on that Troncones Mexico vacation maybe you can have a little tribute to the sunny beaches
in your closet.
Athletic looks: This particular trend could be in for some abuse, but
if you have worked hard on your body this winter, it's very chic to show
it off. Bare midriffs, form fitting clothes, and short skirts all had their
place going from an Ontario triathlon to the runway. You may not want to go in this direction if you work with a sheet metal crimper but there are lots of situations where this type of outfit would be appropriate.
Those are just two of the basic trends that seemed to show themselves on every
stage in the months leading up to spring. In our next articles, we will take
a look at some specific categories in fashion.
