Women's Clothes

If we are going to be very honest about the future of any fashion designer, then it is a safe bet to say that the majority of your creative work will be spent designing women's fashions. A quick look at almost any runway show, department store or fashion boutique will reveal that there are far more creative options in the area of women's clothes than there are in men's.

The reason for this might be twofold: The first is that women tend to care more about fashion than men. To be sure, most men do care about their appearance, but only the ultra urbane tend to give any real thought into the latest fashion lines for their own sex; we are willing to bet that despite the displays of the highest fashions at events like movie premieres or the Oscars, most of the celebrity men attending had to be cajoled into their suits by fashion-conscious wives or managers; guys like to dress up but to most, a tux is a tux. If you look at the people coming into average King west lofts or neighbourhoods in Kitchener real estate at 6:00pm, most of the men will look about the same. Women, on the other hand, will be a berage of colours and styles.

Women have several thoughts that run through their heads when they consider what the appropriate apparel for them will be on any given occasion. Among them: the need to be original, the time of year and what that means for colour co-ordination, any favourite accessories they wish to bring along, what their date will be wearing, a need to follow the latest trends and of course the degree to which the chosen garments will complement their assets. Whether you're going to work to sell Oakville homes for sale or having a night out to celebrate starting your own postcard printing company there is a new style to consider.

And that last point is the second reason why we believe the future as far as fashion creativity will always be in women's clothes. Men, if we are honest, do come in different shapes and size, but for some reason the same type of fashion seems to suit all those sizes best. Women, on the other hand, wear different types of fashion with varying degrees of success. A tux can be modelled to look good on a man who is 6'2" and 220 pounds, and with a few adjustments will also look good on a guy who is 5'6" and 160 pounds. Try saying the same thing for any dress! But Suzy in her Windsor home still wants to be able to look as good as Rachel in her Rosedale, Toronto real estate.

It could be that women just have more parts worth emphasizing, and the point of that emphasis will depend on the woman in question. It could even be cultural; whereas in most cultures the historic role of the man was some sort of breadwinner and the quality of the individual was defined by his relative traits, the role of women all over the world tended to vary.

Today's male and female roles continue to have an influence in the way that fashion plays out for the sexes. Different cuts and styles of clothes can be designed to work best with different men, but there will never be the same amount of diversity as there can be in the line of women's clothing. Just think about the swimsuit genre; there are probably two dozen different bikini cuts for the women you see in Fenelon Falls cottages in the summer, while men really only have three or four styles to choose from in the first place.

What we are saying is, for any fashion designer women's clothes offer the most opportunity for creativity, diversity, and success. Whether it is cultural or not, men's fashion just does not, and might never, have the same dynamic edge as that designed for a woman.
