When it comes to fashion and design, it isn't all about what women want. We are not saying it isn't mostly about what women want, but remember that there are designers out there who cater to the often overlooked element of the fashion world. Children and men both need clothes as well, and while the market and attention to men's and children's fashion is not nearly as wide as that for women, these are two niches that are worth paying attention to for any person thinking to break into the fashion industry.
For starters, both areas of fashion tend to be a little bit easier than that for women, despite the fact that you might not have as much room for your creative mind as you do in women's. Men in particular tend to have some pretty basic rules when it comes to average fashion types; generally men's formal wear covers up as much skin as possible, and emphasizes the parts of the male body that testify to strength (shoulders, waist, and so on). If you're looking for male fashion for the workplace, you'll see similar clothes on male salesmen pump parts to exectives on a large software company making group collaboration software.
Consider, too, the phenomenon of the group of men that dresses the same. There are not too many women out there who are not attracted to the idea of a man in uniform (and we don't just mean those working at CFB Kingston or the guys who clean your eavestroughs in Toronto; bands that make girls scream in hysterics tend to be those whose members dressed identically to one another (this rule holds up from the Beatles to the Backstreet Boys). In fact, take a look at when these bands tend to get noticed less for their sex appeal and more for their artistic integrity; it is after they assert some independence by dressing differently (and that was a career for the Backstreet Boys).
There is a link between what seems to work for men and what works in the boys' area of children's fashion; if you know any moms with two or more boys, odds are you have seen her dress them the same way, on purpose, on more than one occasion. Again, there seems to be something about the idea of a male that makes similar styles of dressing more appealing. If you can figure out how to work with this idea, you might have the beginnings of a bright future.
Of course, the area of children's clothing also includes little girls, and that means you are back in the creative ball game. Little girls are a lot like older girls, but with designs that don't have to worry about emphasizing curves or de-emphasizing certain body parts. Fashion for little girls has always been, and will likely always be, about bright colours and sunshine, smiles and sunny days: A great chance for a designer to stretch their creative muscle and to have a lot of fun at the same time.
When looking at children's fashion, one could also look at very young children and what can be done with creative cloth diapers or other accessories. It seems to be a trend now for celebrities to match their babies, and sometimes it can come off as quite cute.
On that last note, it may be that the area of children's fashion could be a far less stressful one than designing or buying clothes for adults. Mark this up to the fact that most kids are their own accessories, but at any rate you definitely have an easier time making clothes for those who are not too picky.
In this section, these are the areas of fashion that we will be talking about. Expect to see articles on design, as well as current trends in the areas of men's and children's clothing.
