Business Wear

We're surprised to find ourselves saying it, but there are some fashion trends that are truly a breath of fresh air. It's hard to believe that it was less than a half century ago that women were confined to men's idea of what looked good or just confined to their houses. The entrance of women into the world of business meant that a new revolution had come not just to society, but to fashion as well.

And what a revolution it has been. Unlike other fashion areas, where like it or not there is always going to be some emphasis on blatant sex appeal, business wear is all about toned down professionalism. That's not to say that business wear can't be sexy, it just isn't overtly so. A women usually doesn't wear the same sort of thing to her office working on a project as she does on her way out past Brampton condos.

Designers of business wear fashions for women pull off minor miracles with their lines every single season. Why? Well, you try designing an ensemble that a woman can attract attention in while still being taken seriously, walking that fine line between a promotion for ability and one for the turn of a leg. It's not an easy path, for designers or for women. When you're looking to deal with a professional, whether it be the receptionist at a Barrie catering company or at the spa giving well deserving ladies microdermabrasion treatments, you would expect some modesty in their attire.

That said, there are designers who pull the look off fabulously every year, and all women are better for it. And unlike most fashion trends, we really do think business wear works for all women, whether you're going to a job interview with a Nanny Oakville agency or transforming from suburban mom in your Cabbagetown real estate home home to an exec on Bay Street. You can add a little flair without worrying about what shouldn't be showing, and that means it's fairly simple to look good. Here are some of the biggest trends in business wear for women this spring season.

The military look: Stark lines and toned down colours work well for spring business. Again, it's a look that works on any woman in business.
Baggy pants: If you like the blouse and pants look but hate cling, spring's the right time for you this year. All bottoms are baggy, and that includes the ones you wear on the job. These go from you're job working for a nutrient management services business to a dinner date easily.

Skirts: Skirts are back in for those who like to add some diversity to their business wardrobe, and some freedom to boot.

Blazers: A perfect complement to the skirt. Sharp shoulders and rolled up sleeves are in.

Schoolboy: Designers who made a particular splash on the runways expanded on the theme of prep school boy in women's business wear. It's a perfect look and combines mystique with professionalism in a way that's not David Bowie androgyny or so masculine that someone will ask you for help picking wire cutters.
